Planning

Here we will discuss the things an adventurer needs to take on their expeditions.

What to wear.

What to wear is entirely dependent on the weather. Here are some clothes you need to wear on your adventures.

Warm weather clothes

  • A sunhat (optional) – In sunny weather, you want to protect your head. A sunhat will do that for you.
  • Sunscreen – Warm weather can sometimes mean sun burns, but sunscreen can protect you from those stinging burns.
  • Short sleeve tops – You don’t want to be boiling in long sleeves on a hot day!
  • Long trousers – Although it can be tempting to wear shorts or skirts on a hot day, our walks often have nettles and trousers can protect you from them.

Cold weather clothes

  • A hat (optional) – This keeps your head nice and warm!
  • A scarf (optional) – This keeps your neck warm and cosy.
  • A long sleeved top – On a cold day, you don’t want to be wearing short sleeves: you’ll be freezing!
  • A jumper (optional) – Just a long sleeved top will not shield you from the cold.
  • A winter coat – A water/snow proof coat is also helpful in cold weather, as you never know quite what is going to happen.
  • Gloves (optional) – You’ve got to keep your fingers warm!

All year round clothes

  • A coat – A raincoat, a summer coat or a winter coat. Always take a raincoat with you, even if you don’t use it.
  • Walking boots – Walking boots are the best footwear to wear on a walk. They can survive mud and dirt and they are thick, to protect you from anything that might harm your feet.

What to take.

A backpack
A backpack

There are lots of things to take with you on your trips – here are some of the most important things.

  • A backpack – This is to carry all your things in. Having a big backpack is helpful, but you can have multiple small bags and share the load with anyone else on your expedition.
  • Drinks – You don’t want to be dehydrated on a walk, so bring some drinks to have at breaks.
  • Food – If you are planning on staying for a long time, or through meal times, bringing food is a great way to keep up your spirits and your energy levels.
  • Raincoat – It can rain at any time, and sometimes unexpectedly. Always bring a raincoat in case of rain.
  • A map (optional) – if you can find a printable map from somewhere, that can be helpful.
  • Your phone – Your phone can also be used to find a map. You don’t have to have it out all the time, but it’s handy if you get lost.

Questions to ask before you go.

There are some important things you need to consider before going on your walk. Here are some questions to ask before you set off.

  • What does the weather forecast say? You always need to have an idea of the weather so you know what clothes to bring.
  • Is it going to be muddy? You don’t want to wear your best clothes on a muddy walk.
  • How long is the walk going to be? If you are not so active, or you have kids, you need to make sure the walk is suitable for you.
