Crunchie Experiment

Matthew makes a Crunchie!

Matthew experimented with baking soda and made a Crunchie!

You will need:

  • A tray
  • A cup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons of golden syrup
  • Half a cup of sugar
  • A pan
  • A whisk
  • A spatula
  • Greasproof paper

Method:

  1. Measure half a cup of sugar.
  2. Add the sugar to the pan.
  3. Put in 4 tbsps of golden syrup.
  4. Grease the tray and add the paper.
  5. Stir on heat until simmering.
  6. Lower the heat and stir for 3 minutes.
  7. Add in the baking soda.
  8. Whisk.
  9. Transfer to the tray – BE WARNED, the mixture expands quickly, so it may overflow.
  10. Leave to harden.
  11. Break the Crunchie.
  12. Eat!

How does it work?

The baking soda reacted to the melted sugar and created a huge foamy froth.
