Dancing Ghosts Experiment

We investigate static balloons.

Matthew made some dancing ghosts today. Let’s find out how he did it!

You will need:

  • Some toilet roll or tissue
  • A balloon
  • A pen
  • Cellotape
  • Scissors

Method:

  1. With your scissors, cut out a ghost shape from the toilet roll/tissue.
  2. Draw two eyes and any other features you want to the ghost.
  3. Using the Cellotape, stick the ghosts down to a flat surface.
  4. Rub the balloon on your hair or t-shirt.
  5. Hold the balloon over the ghosts – they should move and dance when you move the balloon.

How does it work?

When you rub the balloon through your hair/t-shirt, it becomes static. Static means that electrons are on the balloon. Electrons are invisible, so you can’t see them. The electrons pull the tissue towards them, and that’s why the ghosts move!
