Rainbow Skittle Experiment!

Matthew discovers what happens when Skittles meet warm water.

Matthew experimented with Skittles. He added them to warm water. Here’s what happened.

You will need:

  • Some Skittles
  • Some warm water (from the tap, NOT the kettle)
  • A plate
  • A jug

Method:

  1. Place Skittles in a circular pattern around the edge of your plate.
  2. Pour a little warm water (just enough to cover the plate) over the Skittles.
  3. Stand back and watch!

How does it work?

The warm water melted the shell of the Skittles. Skittle shells are made of sugar, so when the hot water touched the shell, it began to melt. Have you ever made a cup of tea? When you put the sugar in the water, it melts. It’s just the same!
